What data goes into a battery passport?

Every piece of information an EU battery passport holds, grouped by who can see it, with what's shared by a whole model and what belongs to one battery.

Short answer

A battery passport holds the information set out in Annex XIII of the Batteries Regulation; our field list has around 50 items. Most of it describes the battery model and is public: manufacturer, chemistry, capacity, voltage, expected lifetime in cycles and how to return the battery. More detailed information, such as composition, dismantling instructions and the individual battery's state of health, is restricted. Below is every field PackPass supports, grouped the way the regulation groups them.

Four levels of access

Annex XIII splits the passport into four parts, each with its own audience:

PartWho can see itWhat's in it
1. PublicAnyone who scans the QR codeIdentification, materials, carbon footprint and sourcing, performance and durability, end-of-life information
2. Legitimate interestPeople with a legitimate interest (such as repairers and recyclers) and the CommissionDetailed composition, part numbers and spare part contacts, dismantling information, safety measures
3. AuthoritiesNotified bodies, market surveillance authorities and the CommissionTest reports proving compliance
4. Legitimate interest, per batteryPeople with a legitimate interest (such as repairers, recyclers and second-life operators)The individual battery's state of health, expected lifetime in calendar years, performance in use, status and usage, such as charge cycles, negative events and operating conditions

Exactly who counts as having a "legitimate interest", and how they get access, will be set by an implementing act that the Commission expects to publish in draft in late 2026.

Per model or per battery?

Every battery has its own passport and QR code, but most of the data is the same for every battery of a model. In practice you collect the model data once (usually from your supplier) and add only a few things per battery: its serial number, date of manufacture and, over its life, its state of health and status. See how this looks in our sample passport.

Every field, by group

"Per model" fields are the same for all batteries of a model; "per battery" fields belong to one physical battery. Each battery's unique identifier, serial number and date of manufacture are recorded in addition to the fields below, along with the battery category and model identification. Some fields apply only to certain battery types, for example only to some industrial batteries, and the warranty field only if you offer a commercial warranty.

Where the data comes from

  • Your cell or pack supplier: chemistry, materials, hazardous substances, capacity, voltages, power, cycle life, temperatures, efficiency, internal resistance, composition and dismantling information, test reports.
  • You: your company details as the economic operator, warranty terms, collection and take-back information for the countries you sell in, serial numbers and manufacture dates for each shipment.
  • Over the battery's life: state of health and usage data, usually from the battery management system, and status changes such as repurposing.

Collecting the supplier data is usually the slowest part. Our guide to getting the data from suppliers outside the EU has a ready-made request list.

Rather not do this yourself?

PackPass checks which of your batteries are covered, tells you exactly what to ask your suppliers for and publishes the passports and QR codes for you. The first 10 companies get 3 months free.
